Jenica was born to poor parents, Jander and Alinea Garbo. They are lifelong residents of Sandpoint and have never known any other city, never traveling further then outer edge of the waste collection routes assigned by Gorvi, who has employed Jander ever since he took over the dung-sweeper business 6 years ago. However, Jander has been doing this for as long as he has been working.
Jander has always sorted through the refuse before dumping it down Junker’s Edge. Pulling out anything that can be remade, rebuilt, or may come in handy at a later date. The family cottage is surrounded by what many consider to be junk, or trash. But everything has a purpose or is awaiting a purpose. This is frowned upon by most in the town, but on the occasional time that Jander can fix something or provide something of value most leave him be. This is hard back breaking work that requires long hours and often 7 days a week services.
Alinea has worked for Gressel Tenniwar at the Fatman’s Feedbag since she was 10 years old when she became old enough to carry a tray of drinks from the bar. Because the bar is open well into the night, Alinea has been absent for most of Jenica’s youth. What little time she did spend with her mother was usually inside the Fatman’s Feedbag. Gressel would pour Jenica a “ Honey Hound” , and tell her the sordid details of the comings and goings of the bar patrons.
Because her parents spend most of their time working to provide the necessities Jenica was free to wander the streets and countryside of Sandpoint. She spent much of her time peaking over the edge of Junker’s Edge watching the goblins rummage through the trash and scraps looking for food and valuables. Between her father and the goblins, she honed a sharp eye to the true value of things, even when others don’t see it. She feels both an awe and revulsion to the goblins, but over the years of observation she began to pick up their language as they squawked at each other in their broken common and goblin speak among the trash.
As she matured, over the years of scrounging in the trash and on the streets of Sandpoint she grew tougher than most of the boys, who picked on her in her youth. Surprisingly, though she looks average for a woman her age, she can take a punch as well as she can land one.
An old retired adventurer and town guard, Mordicai Knode, took an interest in the young girl. He’d watch her fend off a group of bullies with a dexterous ease that left the boys with a bloodied lip and wounded pride. He took her under his wing and with no children or family of his own he began to teach her to handle a rapier, and about how a well-placed blow can outdo a forceful blow any time. He spent most days with her, keeping her out of trouble, but after 8 years fell ill. On his last days, he left his most prized possession to Jenica; His Masterwork Rapier. He told her she needed to make something of herself, and her talents with a blade. She was the best he had ever seen with the little training and practice she’d received, and he warned her about the dull and drudge life her parents led. It could kill a man faster than a sword if she let it.
